About Us

Our Mission

The Rainbow Connection grants wishes and provides support services to Michigan children battling life-threatening illnesses.

Our Vision

To bring joy, happiness, and hope to families during an unimaginable time.

What We Believe

We believe in standing by our wish families every stop of the way. We are there for them before, during and after their wish, offering unwavering support and care.

Our History

The Rainbow Connection was born out of love, tragedy, and the desire to make a difference. It began as a heartfelt tribute by L. Brooks Patterson to his dear friend Ron Dobson and his two children, Jennifer and Tim, who tragically lost their lives in a plane crash. Janet Dobson, the sole survivor of the crash and a cherished member of our board, continues to inspire our mission.

In 1980, “The Dobson” golf outing was established in memory of Jennifer and Tim, raising funds to support Clarkston students. As the event grew, so did the vision, to bring hope and joy to children across Michigan.

By 1985, The Rainbow Connection was officially incorporated as a wish-granting organization. Our first wish remains an unforgettable moment when the legendary Muhammad Ali shadow-boxed at the bedside of Wish Child John Bowden at Children’s Hospital.

Since that day, we have granted over 4,400 wishes for Michigan children, providing not only magical moments but also emergency assistance, enhancements, scholarships and ongoing support.
