L. Brooks Patterson was the founder and heart of The Rainbow Connection, transforming a heartbreaking tragedy into a lasting legacy. His vision and dedication established The Rainbow Connection, achievements that continue to inspire today.
Brooks served as Oakland County Executive for 26 years, beginning his career in 1972 as Prosecuting Attorney. After a brief hiatus to practice law, he returned to public service in 1992. Though he often joked about the longevity of his tenure, he deeply valued every moment of his work.
One of the most memorable moments for Brooks and The Rainbow Connection was granting the very first wish in 1985. John, a Wish Child from Detroit, dreamed of meeting “The Champ,” Muhammad Ali. When Ali was in town, The Rainbow Connection reached out, and he graciously visited John at the hospital. The excitement spread from John’s family to the nurses and doctors, creating an unforgettable experience. Brooks fondly remembered the event, saying…
"Ali came to the hospital and visited with the child and shadowboxed with him… Ali was quite generous with his time."
Before his passing in 2019, Brooks expressed pride in how The Rainbow Connection had grown and flourished over the years. He credited its success to a strong foundation, excellent fundraising efforts, a supportive Board, dedicated volunteers, and passionate staff. Brooks was confident that The Rainbow Connection would continue to grant wishes and bring joy to children for years to come.
The Rainbow Connection remains steadfast in honoring Brooks' vision. His legacy lives on in every wish granted, every child supported, and every moment of hope created. Brooks was more than a founder, he was a mentor, a leader, and a friend. For him, the Wish Children always came first, and we proudly follow his example to this day.
